LEVI Colwill’s own goal sent Nottingham Forest into the Premier League for the first time in 23 years in a 1-0 Championship play-off final win over Huddersfield at Wembley.
Luckless centre-back Colwill put through his own net after James Garner’s teasing cross, that Jack Colback ducked under and Ryan Yates failed to reach.
Huddersfield thought they were going to be given a route back into the match when Harry Toffolo went over in the penalty area, but referee instead Jon Moss booked him for diving with VAR ruling not to recommend overturning the decision.
Forest were bottom of the table and winless when Steve Cooper took charge and replaced Chris Hughton in September, but have now won football’s most lucrative match and are headed to the top tier.
Financial experts rate the Championship play-off final as worth at least £170million to the winners, and Forest will now enjoy a major cash injection to go along with the glory of a long-awaited return to the top.
Saints have not played Forest since a 3-0 Championship win at the City Ground in January 2012, with goals from Guly Do Prado, David Connolly and Morgan Schneiderlin.
Early odds from bookmaker Sky Bet make Bournemouth (8-13) odds-on favourites for relegation, alongside Forest (4-5), while fellow newly-promoted Fulham are priced at 6-5.
The clubs listed for relegation after that are Leeds United (11-4), Everton (4-1) and Saints (4-1).
Premier League 2022-23: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Saints, Tottenham, West Ham, Wolves.
