TAYLOR Bevan continued his Commonwealth Games journey with a convincing win over Samoa’s Jancen Poutoa in the round of 16 of the Men’s Light Heavyweight competition.

Poutoa represented more of a challenge than Onyx Lee, the New Zealander competitor Bevan dispatched in one round in his first bout of the tournament, pushing the Welshman to the third round.

However, the Fair Oak raised boxer was in control throughout, scoring full marks on the judges’ scorecard in the first two rounds.

A knockdown in the first round set the tone for the contest, with Poutoa clearly tiring in the second round.

In the end Bevan secured the win as referee Tserenkhand Tsogtgerelhe called the fight off when Poutoa was knocked down for a second time a minute into the third round, setting up a quarter-final bout with Jamaica’s Jerone Ennis.

Ennis was pushed all the way in his round of 16 win, narrowly edging past Australia’s Billy McAllister on points 3-2.

The pair will match-up on Wednesday evening, in the last bout of the night.

With both losing semi-finalists awarded bronze medals, Bevan is just one win away from medalling in Birmingham.
