FURIOUS Premier League legend Ian Wright claimed Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will be left bemused as a result of Saints’ clash with Manchester United.
The Villans boss watched on as the officials awarded Crystal Palace a penalty last weekend, for a contentious close proximity handball on Lucas Digne.
Wilfried Zaha stepped up and converted on the rebound to put the Eagles 2-1 ahead, in a game they went on to win.
However, during Saints’ eventual 1-0 defeat to Manchester United, Scott McTominay got away with a treble of handballs inside the box due to close proximity.
Referee Andy Madley, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side trailing in the second-half, awarded no penalty for the infringement and VAR Peter Bankes stuck with the on-field decision.
Former Arsenal bagsman Wright agrees with the officials and their actions on this occasion, but says it is “ridiculous” the lack of consistency.
“That (Palace’s) shouldn’t have been a penalty and to be honest they have probably got this one right this weekend,” he said on BBC’s Match of the Day.
“As much as Southampton deserved something out of the game, for them to have got it would have been unjust. I wonder how Steven Gerrard is feeling this week.”
Host Gary Lineker suggested last week's error was just a mistake, but Wright does not deem that acceptable.
Wright continued: “You shouldn’t make a mistake, that’s what VAR is there for, to help with everything. We're taking all that away.
"You can’t get that wrong, it’s a ridiculous mistake.”
