SAINTS have reportedly had an approach for highly-rated PSV winger Cody Gakpo rejected, who had previously been linked to Manchester United this window.

The 23-year-old is subject to heavy interest from Premier League clubs this summer after scoring 12 goals and providing 13 assists in Eredivisie last campaign.

The Dutch international has started this season in similar form with three goals and assists each in the opening three fixtures.

Speaking on his own future, Gakpo said: “I can’t say anything about it at the moment. As I said before, the whole picture has to be right. It is a puzzle and in the coming days I will see which puzzle fits best.”

Manchester United’s interest in the left-sided talent is said to have cooled as they look set to land Ajax attacker Antony in a deal worth up to £90million.

Daily Echo:

The Athletic report one-time Eredivisie winner Gakpo has been a key target for Saints this summer, with Sport Republic co-founder Rasmus Ankersen leading talks with the star.

They add Leeds United and Everton have an interest in him, but it is Saints who have had the most concrete approach with an offer rejected by the Dutch club.

Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted he thinks there will still be incomings and outgoings at St Mary’s ahead of Thursday’s summer transfer deadline day.

Saints are in the market for a forward to bolster their attack, and could look to make that an out-and-out winger if they persist with the new 4-3-3 shape.

Gakpo has 46 goals in 143 games for PSV, having progressed through their academy system to become a goalscorer for the Netherlands national team.
