STAR Kyle Walker-Peters laid out his demands to Saints teammates ahead of the return to Premier League action, saying: “I want us to keep being solid, that is a non-negotiable.”
The 25-year-old has been an integral part of a defence that, although still searching for their first clean sheet of the campaign, has limited opposition in recent weeks.
In a tough three matches versus Manchester United, Chelsea and Wolves, the opposition teams only racked up 10 shots on goal between them – despite defeat to the former and latter.
Saints only conceded once in each of the games and gave themselves a platform to reach seven points with a comeback 2-1 win over Chelsea in a midweek fixture at St Mary’s.
However, following Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s passing last Thursday, the scheduled visit from Brentford to the south coast was postponed along with every Premier League fixture.
“I want us to keep being as solid as we have been,” Walker-Peters told the Daily Echo, speaking about the upcoming fixtures before the international break, before postponements.
Saints are now prepared just to travel to Aston Villa on Friday, September 16 (8PM), before some players join up with their countries.
“I know we lost to United and Wolves but we’re not conceding many chances, we’re solid as a unit and I think that is a non-negotiable,” Walker-Peters continued.
“Be really hard to break down and we’ve shown the goals will come, we’re creating a lot of chances and will definitely score more goals.”
Assessing the previous three results, the defender added: “It’s not bad but we were disappointed with the United and Wolves games.
“I think we could have taken more from both of those games but to only lose 1-0 showed improvement. We didn’t go 1-0 down and end up losing 3-0, we stayed quite positive and solid so we take the positives but look to kick on.”
