SAINTS confirm their Premier League match at Aston Villa this week will go ahead, following the postponement of the weekend’s fixtures.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side will visit Villa Park on Friday, September 16 (8PM), after the scheduled clash with Brentford at St Mary’s on Saturday, September 10 was postponed, as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Other fixtures with relevant policing issues have been postponed, however, including Chelsea’s match against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, and Manchester United’s home match versus Leeds United.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s fixture against Crystal Palace, which was due to be played at 3PM on Saturday, September 17, will also remain postponed.
But Saints will play, along with six other scheduled fixtures that weekend.
The Premier League’s statement reads: “Following extensive consultation with clubs, police, local Safety Advisory Groups and other relevant authorities, there was no other option but to postpone the three fixtures.
“The Premier League would like to thank the UK Football Policing Unit and other police forces across the country, as well as our broadcast partners, for their support during this process, and will continue to liaise with them ahead of the weekend.
“For the matches being played during the period of National Mourning, tributes will be paid to The Queen at Premier League stadiums.”
