JAMES Ward-Prowse insisted he would look at “every game” as a final chance to impress England boss Gareth Southgate and book his place on the plane to the World Cup in Qatar.

The Saints skipper has previously stated how missing out on last summer’s final European Championship squad with the Three Lions has given him extra motivation to earn his spot this time round.

Ward-Prowse will hope to be in the England squad announced by Southgate later today, as they prepare for Nations League encounters against Italy and Germany later this month.

Saints have just 10 games in all competitions before the global tournament begins in November.

Quizzed on his England chances ahead of Friday’s trip to Aston Villa, Ward-Prowse said: “I think you have to look at every game as your final chance to impress.

“There's such a large pool of players that can be chosen and he's got so many good players to pick from you have to do what you can to be in that.

“That's the goal - making sure I perform as well as I can here and if I do that to a good enough level, then hopefully that will come.”

England reached the final of last summer’s tournament and suffered the agony of losing to Italy on penalties.

Asked whether he felt he was in a better place with his game after missing out on the Euros, the 27-year-old replied: “Yeah, I do. I think not just the set-piece and the free-kick aspect which everybody talks about but I think the other side of it as well.

“I want to keep improving year on year and making sure that all aspects of my game are getting better and it's no different for this year.

“I think I've definitely learned from past experiences and I feel as though I'm in a good place.

England’s World Cup opener comes against Iran on Monday, November 21.

Quizzed on how much it would simply mean for him to get to Qatar, the midfielder said: “It'd be a massive achievement and obviously having missed out on the previous one and to see the success the team had, it was difficult to see on one hand because you wanted to be part of it and you couldn't.

“But also, you're absolutely buzzing for them because you can see the work and effort they've put in.

“So, it’s no surprise as to why they went to the lengths that they did and hopefully we can go further this time.”
