PREMIER League legend Jamie Carragher suggested Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu should have done better with Aston Villa’s solitary goal.
Jacob Ramsey smashed off the crossbar for the only notch of the contest at Villa Park on Friday, condemning Saints to back-to-back defeats.
A lapse of concentration in defence had Republic of Ireland international Bazunu exposed and his back-post and forced into a smart save behind for a corner-kick.
From the resulting set-piece, Bazunu appeared to make a top reflex save in pushing a power header onto the crossbar, but it resulted in Ramsey smashing the rebound in off the same woodwork.
Carragher, who was a Champions League winner with Liverpool, admitted “the goalkeeper (Bazunu) didn’t do well enough,” assessing the goal on Sky Sports.
Speaking at the end of the match, the 44-year-old added: “Southampton were really poor tonight but you're going to have nights like that with a team so young.
"They've had some big results already this season, looking at the Chelsea (2-1 win) one,” Carragher continued.
"I'll be honest, before the start of the season I thought Southampton would be there or thereabouts in terms of relegation. That could still happen but I think they've made a decent start to the season, much better than many of us envisaged."
