Chris Makin has been forced to follow Southampton teammate Claus Lundekvam into retirement after failing to shake off his injury problems.
The 34-year-old full-back has not played since September due to a hip complaint and, on the advice from his doctor, has now decided to hang up his boots.
Makin began his career at Oldham and enjoyed successful spells at Sunderland and Ipswich before joining Saints from Reading in 2006.
Club captain Lundekvam confirmed his retirement last month after breaking down as he attempted to get fit following an ankle operation. The Norwegian made over 400 appearances in 12 years with Saints.
Makin made 29 starts and three sub appearances during his near two years at Saints.
