FORMER Saints defender Jannik Vestergaard spoke out at being left out of Leicester City’s squad and insisted: “I do not know what has happened.”

The Denmark international joined the Foxes from Saints for a reported £15million in August 2021, featuring 20 times for his club across five competitions last season.

But he is yet to make a Premier League squad for the Foxes this campaign, having been left out by boss Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking to Danish publication BT, having also been omitted from the Denmark squad, the 30-year-old said: “It's a very frustrating situation for me in Leicester right now - just as it's generally a frustrating time for the club in terms of results.

"Personally, it's decidedly disappointing that I haven't had the chance in the league, because I had a good pre-season, where I got a lot of playing time in the test matches, where it went well for me - and where I arrived in super good shape for the Premier League - the start.

"I must honestly admit that I do not know what has happened. I came back to the club after the summer holiday and after the two international matches for Denmark with victories over Austria and the world champions France.

“I spoke to the club and got the clear impression that they were happy with me, that we started from scratch in the new season and that I was given the same chance as everyone else to play.

"But when the league started, I was suddenly completely outside and have only started in one cup match, where I played well and we kept a clean sheet. Afterwards, I was on the outside again.

"I work hard in training, where things are actually going really well for me, and I still believe that I will get the chance. I am completely ready if the manager chooses to use me and my qualities. I am in good physical shape and believe that I could help the club back on track and out of the difficult situation in terms of results.”

Leicester have picked up just one point from their opening seven top-flight games.
