SAINTS academy sensation Dom Ballard admitted pride for himself and “everyone around me” looking back at scoring on his first-team debut.
The 17-year-old forward, who has been netting for fun at youth levels, thrust his name into the mouths of the senior team’s supporters at Cambridge United.
With a building reputation from four goals in the opening three Premier League 2 matches, Ballard was one of three academy stars given their debuts by manager Ralph Hasenhuttl in the EFL Cup.
Ballard – on the pitch for just 15 minutes – took full advantage and turned in for his first Saints goal during the 3-0 win, after his initial shot was saved.

“It was a dream come true so I’m really proud of myself and everyone around me who’s made it happen, a dream come true,” Ballard now tells club media.
“I went not knowing if I was going to play so you just have to prepare yourself right. I did that and it gave me the best opportunity to score or effect the game, and that’s what I did.”
Ballard has since continued on a similar trajectory, scoring three goals for England’s under-18s as they won the Pinatar Tournament in Spain.
“When he (Hasenhuttl) says your name, you’re excited. It’s what you dream about,” Ballard added, recalling his debut on August 23.
“I saw Yan (Valery) dribbling, and I thought just make the box and who knows, it could fall to me. Obviously, it did.
“The first shot I thought I caught it really well and I was gutted it didn’t go in, but I reacted well and it’s all instinct isn’t it. It was destined to happen I guess. I didn’t sleep on Tuesday night, I was too excited. What a night.”
