I READ something recently which might interest anyone who collects football memorabilia, particularly shirts.
There is a shirt which was worn by Manchester City player Sergio Aguero, still unwashed, which apparently he wore in the last game of the 2011-12 Premier League season.
He scored the winner after 93 minutes in a game against QPR, which got Manchester City their first league title in 44 years.
But the main thing which interested me is that shirt is now expected to go to auction and is expected to raise at least £20,000.
I would think there will be a few people looking around, particularly to see if they have any England shirts from the 1966 World Cup, or I suppose 1976 if you’re a Southampton fan!
Talking about money, I had to read it again when I read something saying Nottingham Forest were apparently looking to spend between £50m-100m in the January transfer window.
I suppose my old friend, as I always mention in connection with Forest, Brian Clough, could have really gone to town on that sort of cash.
It shows that there a lot of people, who possibly don’t even get to games these days, but can go way back to when they were younger and compare the game nowadays to the old days. So many things are different, but money is definitely one thing which seems to play a much bigger part nowadays.
Talking about differences, I noticed that Arsenal are apparently looking to keep hold of their technical director, Edu, by tying him down to a long-term contract.
That is interesting because, what it means is he is obviously of course on the board full-time, as opposed to old days when, Arsenal in particular had a strong, powerful board, with the likes of Ken Friar and the Hill-Woods, but most of them on the board had other jobs during the week. But they were a strong board and ran the club very well. They were all well known in the game and popular for the way they ran Arsenal.
To see them talking about a ‘technical director’ might be something that not all other clubs have got yet, but, like the old days, they might follow them.
On to another big club in England in Manchester United. As I’ve said before, Cristiano Ronaldo was a player I always kept an eye on, having met him when he first arrived in England along with Sir Alex.
But he hit the headlines for the wrong reason recently, when apparently he must have been upset at being put on the bench as a substitute, but then refused to go on the pitch.
He obviously must think he is still as good as he was a few years ago, not happy to be on the bench. But, towards the end of the game, when the manager wanted him to come on, he got up, but walked down the tunnel and went home.
No player in the game is good enough to do that sort of thing. He will obviously have been disciplined and I would think the manager will be pleased if someone else came along to take him, because he will undoubtedly be not the right one to have around the dressing room if he can do that sort of thing in public.
He was however back in the side and scored during United's 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday night.
All Saints supporters will remember the Liebherr name. Everyone will remember when Markus took over the club and certainly added finance when it was needed. Sadly he is no longer with us, but his daughter Katharina took it on.
So it was interesting to see her name crop up this week. She has apparently now seen her 20 per cent shareholding in the club diluted, due to increased capital put into Saints by new owners Sport Republic. But her name will still be connected to the club, which I think is not a bad thing.
