TAYLOR Bevan’s fight with Aaron Bowen at this summer’s Commonwealth Games has been named as the best bout of 2022 at the GB Boxing Annual Awards.

Fair Oak-raised Bevan earnt silver at his first Commonwealth Games, outpunching former teammate Bowen in a pulsating semi-final contest in Birmingham in the men’s light heavyweight division.

The 21-year-old only made the step-up to a heavier weight at the turn of the year, finishing the tournament as runner up to Scot Sean Lazzerini.

Speaking about fighting at a new weight, Bevan told the Daily Echo earlier this year: “I have had quite a few fights now.

“At the start of the year, I went to Finland and I had three fights out there, and I won that tournament, which was my first at 80kg.

“I've been to a few major tournaments as well, which I've won fights out, but I didn't medal at. And I've won another smaller tournament as well.”

Bevan currently splits his time between Hampshire and south Wales, topping up his training programme with the national team with sessions back home with his father.

His father has been a big part of his career, training Bevan at the Poseidon boxing club situated at the Ageas Bowl.

“He got into coaching when I started boxing,” restarted the Welshman.

“My dad used to box when he was about 20, 21.

“Then when I started boxing again, he got into coaching and also he had a few fights as well. He had three fights when I started boxing.

“We actually boxed on the same show once - I won and he lost.

“I do a lot of training with him. I was training a lot more with him before I got on to a full-time program.

“But even now I'm Cardiff Monday to Thursday, and then at the weekend I'll come home and do training with him.

“Maybe on a Friday or Saturday. So we’re quite close and he still supports me with a lot of my training.”
