SAINTS boss Ruben Selles has questioned those who focused on Casemiro’s red card rather than his own side’s impressive performance following Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.
While Saints went toe-to-toe all afternoon with their Champions League-chasing foes, that fact was largely overshadowed by VAR’s intervention in the 34th minute which saw Casemiro’s initial yellow card changed to a straight red for a rash challenge on Charly Alcaraz.
Speaking after the draw, United manager Erik ten Hag criticised what he sees as an ‘inconsistent’ use of VAR by the Premier League.

But asked about the Dutchman’s comments on Tuesday afternoon, Selles chose to focus on his own side’s performance.
“We all have our thoughts and we all have our reaction,” the 39-year-old said. “I was more surprised that everyone was talking about the red card and nobody was talking about our performance.
“That was the biggest point for me. Nobody praised us that we made it a competitive game (when it was) 11 vs 11, to play face to face against Manchester United at Old Trafford, to have chances to win that game.
“I think we were good, we performed well and I think the history of Casemiro and all the things around that game went into that way. But I got the performance from my team and I think generally it has not been fair (the widespread reaction) for how we played that game.
“So I will not comment on what Erik or anybody else from Manchester United did, I will just say that we did a good game, a good performance, and that counts for me.”
Saints have taken seven points from the four games under Selles’s guidance while keeping three clean sheets in that time. They welcome Brentford to St Mary’s on Wednesday night in the reverse fixture of February’s humbling 3-0 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium.
