SAINTS winger Samuel Edozie has been selected to represent England at this month’s U20 World Cup in Argentina.
With England’s participation in the tournament set to get under way on May 21 when they face Tunisia, Edozie will now miss Saints’ final two games of the Premier League season against Brighton and Liverpool - although his side’s relegation could already be confirmed by then.
Edozie has endured a mixed maiden season at St Mary’s since arriving from Manchester City last summer. After initially struggling to break into Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team, the 20 year old became a regular under Nathan Jones, appearing in each of the Welshman’s eight Premier League games in charge.
But since Jones was replaced by Ruben Selles, Edozie has found himself on the fringes of the first-team, playing a total of 24 minutes in the league while only making the matchday squad on three occasions.
Now, Edozie will have the opportunity to end the season on a high note as he heads to South America with the Young Lions as part of Ian Foster’s 21-man squad.
Included in that list is Man City’s Liam Delap, Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka, Spurs’ Alfie Devine, and reigning Championship young player of the year Alex Scott.
Following their opening game against Tunisia, England's under-20s will then face Uruguay on May 25 before ending the group stage by taking on Iraq on May 28.
Should they successfully navigate their group, the knock-out stages start on May 31 with the final at the La Plata Stadium in Buenos Aires - where England’s under-20s will be based - set for June 11.
