SAINTS manager Ruben Selles admitted it is a “dark day for everybody” after the club’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.

Fulham beat the St Mary’s side 2-0 in their own backyard when Saints needed to win all three of their remaining games this season to have any chance of survival.

Carlos Vinicius and Aleksandar Mitrovic scored to send the team down to the Championship but it was not only this result – Saints have not won in their last 11 league ties.

Manager Selles, who replaced Nathan Jones in February, won two of his first three matches versus Chelsea and Leicester City but then started that winless win.

Speaking after relegation was confirmed, he admitted: "I take all the responsibility for the last three months.

"I should be able to win more football matches and win more games. I think I could have done differently, rather than doing more. I made mistakes like any other and it wasn't good enough."

Selles said: "It is a dark day for everybody, the performance on the pitch was not exactly what we expected. We were not good enough today and that is why we are in this situation.

“It’s very difficult when you are inside (the changing room) and their feelings are hard and tough, for some of them this is the first time it has happened in their careers.

“It is not a moment to make it hard for anybody, it is a moment to feel it and to stay in the pain and then to respect this club, that’s the main message.

“If we were at our standards we would not be facing this situation now, and we need to face that. There is not one point where you can say this is exactly when it happens.”

Saints have two remaining fixtures in the Premier League this campaign, visiting Brighton & Hove Albion next week and welcoming Liverpool on the final day.
