GOALKEEPER Willy Caballero has issued a classy farewell message after his move to Leicester City was confirmed, saying he will be “eternally grateful” for his Saints opportunity.
The 41 year old has departed St Mary’s after 18 months at the club to take up a new role as the Foxes’ assistant manager.
Caballero received the call to work under former Malaga teammate Enzo Maresca, who left Manchester City after winning the treble as Pep Guardiola’s number two last month.
Having made five appearances for Saints after his character impressed Ralph Hasenhuttl on an initial one-month emergency contract, Caballero became a key member of the group.
Speaking out after his exit was confirmed by the clubs, Caballero thanked Saints and sent his best wishes to those he had worked with.
“Thank you Southampton, I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity you gave me,” Caballero posted on social media site Instagram.
“I lived my stay in the club with so much passion, love and happiness. Giving myself to the maximum as well as being happy alongside all the rest of the players, goalkeepers and the rest of the staff that works for this beautiful club.”
The veteran shot-stopper added: “Now it’s time for me to accept this new challenge, I wish you all the best. Willy.”
Caballero had been studying his goalkeeping and outfield UEFA coaching badges while still a member of the playing squad at Saints. ‘
The former Argentina international worked under former coach Andrew Sparkes for experience and kept a tactical notebook from the dugout while operating as a substitute.
