SAINTS have reportedly rejected Liverpool's improved £42 million bid for Romeo Lavia.

Jürgen Klopp's had tabled a second bid for the young Belgian midfielder having seen thier initial offer rejected by Southampton.

The Atheltic now report that Saints have rejected a second proposal as it has fallen short of their valuation.

The report goes on to add that personal terms between Lavia and Liverpool will be no issue should a fee be agreed upon, as the 19 year old is believed to be keen on a move to Anfield.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Southampton's director of football Jason Wilcox revealed the club are in a position were they don't need to sell players unless it's a 'win-win' scenario.

He said: "I’ve got a responsibility to make the right recommendations to the football club on whether we should accept something and we can reinvest, whether it’s the right thing for the player or the club.

“In these situations, the best situation is to have a win-win agreement where it’s the best solution for all parties – but we’ve got a value on them.

“We’re a big football club that has been relegated to the Championship but we’ve got a value and we’re not going to allow our players to leave if we don’t feel it’s a win-win."

Lavia replaced James Ward-Prowse in the 74th minute of Saints' final pre-season friendly against AZ Alkmaar at St Mary's on Saturday.

Having arrived from Manchester City last summer, the teenager has made 34 appearances for Southampton across all competitions.
