LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp refused to confirm or deny if his side will continue their pursuit of Saints midfielder Romeo Lavia.
Klopp was speaking ahead of their Premier League opener versus Chelsea and confirmed the Anfield club have now agreed a deal with Brighton for Moises Caicedo.
The figures reported to land the Ecuadorian international midfielder are well over £100million while Saints were looking for half of that for Belgian prodigy Lavia.
Saints had rejected bids worth up to £45million from Liverpool for Lavia while Chelsea gazumped them with a late-night, improved bid on Tuesday night.
Klopp was tight-lipped on whether Liverpool would continue their lengthy pursuit of Lavia even if they land Caicedo after their mega-money agreement.
He said: “The deal with the club is agreed, whatever that means exactly – we want the player, not an agreement.
“We have not endless resources but a couple of things we didn’t expect happened this summer so the club was really stretched. We will see in the end. Besides that, I cannot share anymore.
“Let’s talk about this if these things actually happen. I really cannot say about that (Lavia), that is the truth.
“It’s all step by step, let’s see what happens in the coming days and then let’s go from there – we have enough time to talk about all that.”
Asked if things have changed to see Liverpool spending such sums on individual players, Klopp added: “Everything changed, do I like it? No. But do I realise I was wrong? Yes. Definitely.
“It is the way it goes and in the market is a lot of money. We as a club have to try to make sure we get the best with the resources and money we have.
“I can believe that we really try everything to bring together the best squad. We are not in a dream land where we can point on players and bring them in, it’s a lot of work. Sometimes one door opens and another closes.”
