AN added-time penalty from Adam Armstrong saw Saints secure a late 4-4 draw against Norwich City at St Mary's.
Christian Fassnacht thought he had won all three points for the visitors when he capitalised on a Ryan Manning error six minutes from additional time.
But the 26 year old fired home his second penalty of the game in the 97th minute.
Saints were without James Ward-Prowse as Russell Martin made 10 changes from the side that lost 3-1 to Gillingham in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
Only Stuart Armstrong retained his place in the team ahead of Martin's first competitive home game as Southampton's boss.
The rowdy atmosphere inside St Mary’s was quickly dampened as his side got off to a disastrous start.
After a sustained period of Norwich pressure, Josh Sargent climbed highest to nod Jack Stacey’s cross past Gavin Bazunu on seven minutes.
Having gone behind early, Saints rallied and soon found themselves back on level terms.
Angus Gunn could only parry Jack Stephens’ close-range header back into the path of Jan Bednarek, who smashed the ball into the net.
No sooner than they had equalised, Saints were then awarded a penalty after the referee adjudged Shane Duffy of handling the ball inside the area.
Armstrong stepped forward and coolly converted his second goal of the season to complete a quick turnaround on 21 minutes.
However, the delight soon dissipated as the visitors got themselves back level thanks to a fantastic edge-of-the-box effort from Gabriel Sara.
After a chaotic three goals in six minutes, both teams attempted to grab a foothold in the game.
It was the visitors who managed to take control as Stephens was forced into a crucial block to prevent Kenny McLean from restoring Norwich’s lead.
Jonathan Rowe did manage to pull the Canaries’ back in front when he headed Sara’s cross from a corner past Bazunu in added time.
The fast-paced action continued at the start of the second half - Charly Alcaraz forcing a save out of Gunn before Che Adams replaced the injured Sam Edozie.
The Scotland international soon fired a low-driven shot into the net from the edge of the box to make the game all square once more.
In keeping with the game's chaotic flow, Norwich thought they had scored a fourth goal three minutes later when Barnes turned the ball over the line, but the linesman raised his flag for offside.
The crossbar denied Alcaraz a spectacular goal from 35 yards out as the home side went in search of a fourth goal.
With seven minutes of regular time remaining, Will Smallbone went down injured.
Play continued as Smallbone received treatment off the field, and David Wagner's side made the most of their man advantage.
Manning failed to deal with a cross which allowed substitute Fassnacht to slot the ball past Bazunu from close range.
Sam Amo-Ameyaw was brought on in place of Smallbone as Martin refused to let the result run away from his side.
Saints continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded when the referee pointed to the spot for another penalty deep into injury time.
Armstong stepped forward once more and sent Gunn the wrong way to secure a point for Southampton.
