RUSSELL Martin has said that Will Smallbone's injury is worse than he had initially feared.

Smallbone was withdrawn in the 87th minute of Southampton's 4-4 draw against Norwich City on Saturday after suffering an impact injury.

After the game, Martin noted that the Republic of Ireland international was set to undergo a scan to determine the severity of the knock.

Speaking at Tuesday night's BBC Radio Solent fans' forum, Martin provided a further update on the 23 year old's fitness.

The retired defender said: "I think it's a bit worse than we feared on Saturday, but I also don't think it's going to be anything too long-term - fingers crossed.

"I don't envisage Will being too ready for the weekend, unfortunately.

"I've been really impressed with him since he's been back in. He will be a loss, but hopefully not for very long.

"I always thought that he was a very good player, and he is better than I thought. He's been amazing."

Smallbone has become a key player for Martin's Southampton since returning from his loan at Stoke City in the Championship last season.

Saints are back in action on Saturday, August 19 when they travel to newly promoted Plymouth Argyle for a lunchtime kick-off.
