SAINTS manager Russell Martin insisted Will Smallbone will not be a long-term injury after he was substituted last week against Norwich City.

The midfielder picked up an ankle concern and unconfirmed reports elsewhere suggested the injury would more likely sideline him for months.

Republic of Ireland international Smallbone is set to miss this weekend’s trip to Plymouth Argyle but Martin wants to take the process day by day.

Asked for an update on the 23 year old, Martin told the Daily Echo: “It’s coming along nicely.

“It’s not going to be really long term, so we’re not really concerned about it, it’s just going to rule him out of this weekend, and then we’ll take each day as it comes.

“It’s the oldest cliché in the big but it’s really true, especially about an injury. He’s recovering really quickly, healing really well. The quicker we can get him back in the better because he gives us flexibility and understanding.”

Smallbone spent last season on loan at Stoke City in the Championship before impressing during pre-season on his return to St Mary’s.

His ball-playing ability is seen by Martin and director of football Jason Wilcox as exactly what the club is looking for and he is tipped to have a big season.

Martin will be hoping Smallbone is only sidelined for a matter of weeks, while summer signing Shea Charles is lined up to replace him in the starting XI at Home Park.
