SAINTS manager Russell Martin credited the club’s supporters for “bouncing back” to push his side on despite mistakes and conceding goals.

A second consecutive sold-out away end was rewarded for its venture with another late winner from Che Adams on the road, as Saints beat Plymouth Argyle 2-1.

Argyle equalised within 120 seconds of Nathan Tella’s opener on Saturday but the Saints support almost immediately rallied with a chorus of ‘Marching in’.

Saints have now taken seven points from their opening three Championship fixtures as they look to mount a promotion challenge, and Martin reserved praise for his new fans.

Speaking after the match, he said: “They are amazing. The connection between the fans and us is really important and it’s building all the time.

“Even after the disappointment of last season, how they’ve bought into us and what we are trying to do and stuck with the players after some scary moments is brilliant. That’s so important.

“It was the same in the Norwich game. We made a couple of mistakes and conceded some goals, but the way they bounced back from that is amazing,” Martin added.

“The players are going to need that. The way we play is based on courage and intensity. When your own fans are not quite with you it becomes even more tough to be brave, but they’ve been amazing.

“We are going to need them all the way through because we will be defined by how we get through tough moments together.”

Saints return to action in the Championship with a visit from relegation-tipped QPR on Saturday, August 26 (3 PM), with Gareth Ainsworth’s side having secured three points.
