A FIRST half goal from Omari Hutchinson saw Ipswich beat Saints 1-0 on Tuesday.
The Jamaican international pounced on an error from Shea Charles before squeezing the ball past Bazunu.
It’s the third straight loss for Russell Martin’s side. Here’s how we rated every Southampton player’s performance…
Gavin Bazunu – 6.
Nothing he could do about Hutchinson’s goal. Great save to stop Chaplin’s half-volley and keep Saints in it after the break.
Kyle Walker-Peters – 7.
Creative force. Caused Williams early problems. Great ball to Adams for first-half chance and another for Charles. Fed Adams through for a one-on-one chance in second-half.
Shea Charles – 6.
Headed just wide from a free-kick. Caught in possession for the opening Ipswich goal, but was unlucky with no teammate showing for a pass. Moved into midfield after triple change and did make a positive impact.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis – 6.
Crucial block to prevent the second after Chaplin hit the crossbar. Booked for a foul in the second half. Another crucial block in the closing stages as the ball came low across the box to an Ipswich striker.
Ryan Manning – 6.
Lost possession a few times throughout the game with stray passes. Stung the keeper’s palms with a driving effort in the closing stages. Scapegoated but didn’t concede any real chances as a result of his defensive work.
Will Smallbone – 5.
Part of a unit that did not respond well at all to going behind. Tried his luck from a distance after moving into an advanced midfield role, but blocked behind.
Joe Aribo – 5.
Looked brightly for an early give-and-go and showed for the ball. Gave possession away in the middle of the park which would have seen a second goal but for the crossbar. Didn’t do anything else glaringly wrong but was chosen to come off eight minutes into the second half.
Adam Armstrong – 5.
Went close with a powerful early attempt, which some fans thought was in. Part of a midfield that were not offering and were probably at fault for the first goal. Could have done better with a Kamaldeen low cross later, albeit in a packed box.
Sam Edozie – 6.
His three tackles in the first half was the most of any Saints player, despite only registering 15 touches. Looked bright but had a chance to do more with a ball over from Walker-Peters.
Ryan Fraser – 5.
Looked to cross the ball in a few times but none meeting. A quiet evening for Fraser before he was substituted.
Che Adams – 5.
Turned into traffic with his first touches inside the area. Strong to hold off opponent for his first shot but into the side netting. Hit a one-on-one into the face of Hladky, Southampton’s only clear cut chance. Given armband when A Armstong departed.
Substitutes
Stuart Armstrong (52’) - 6.
Delivered a cross for Alcaraz deep into injury time, which the Argentine headed over.
Jan Bednarek (52’) – 7.
Good header and interception early after coming on to set the tone. Visibly commanding the backline.
Kamaldeen Sulemana (52’) - 6.
Fired a dangerous low ball across for A Armstrong that could have resulted in a big chance. Stupid foul with a push in the back as pressure mounted in 78th minute.
Charly Alcaraz (75’) – 6.
Some good touches to keep play alive with the ball bouncing on the edge of the area. Incisive ball into Kamaldeen behind the defence but the Ghanaian was offside.
Sekou Mara (85’) – N/A.
Played just over 10 minutes but nothing to report.
