SAINTS Women's manager Marieanne Spacey-Cale revealed that she was "super proud" after her side's 2-0 win over Watford.

The south coast side had to play the majority of the second half down to 10 players after Milly Mott was shown a red card with the score at 1-0.

The result saw Southampton FC return to the top of the Barclays Women's Championship after six matches played.

Sophia Pharoah struck in the 19th minute before Molly Pike added the finishing touches to the scoreline deep into additional time.

Speaking to Saints club media after the match, Spacey-Cale said: "I am just super proud of everybody.

"That was a complete squad effort today. After going a player down early in the second half, if you have not got the mentality of working together and being strong together then teams can suffer from that.

"The girls showed what it meant to wear this badge. We were superb today. It is a testament to the work that they do week in and week out. When we got the moments to settle on the ball in the second half, we did it really well."

When Mott was sent off for pulling down Carly Johns and denying the forward a goalscoring opportunity, it looked as if it would be difficult for the visitors to earn all three points.

But Saints showed remarkable fight and composure to frustrate Watford before they snatched a decisive goal late on.

"When teams have got a player more they can get frustrated because our shape was excellent," Spacey-Cale added.

"I think maybe Watford got a little bit frustrated because our shape was good we managed to win the ball back.

"We knew that they would start to push more and more players forward. We knew an opportunity might come and if it did, we had to make sure that we would take it. We did, Molly (Pike) was superb with her finish."
