SAINTS have reportedly shown interest in signing young Manchester City centre-back Jadel Katongo.

The 19 year old has made six league appearances on loan at League One side Peterborough United so far this season.

He scored his first senior goal for Peterborough in their 2-0 EFL Trophy win over Cambridge United in September.

Having come through as a defender, Katongo is also being tried out in midfield. That versatility would likely be a positive for any club hoping to sign him.

The Sun report that Southampton are keen on the defender, whose loan at the Posh runs through until the end of the season.

The report also notes that Burnley were in attendance to watch the City academy graduate last week.

Katongo has been at City since the age of nine and will be very familiar to director of football Jason Wilcox, who spent 11 years working for the club's academy.

Katongo, who is also eligible to play for Zambia, is currently away with the England Elite League squad, alongside Sam Edozie.

Saints have made a habit of signing promising talents from Manchester City's academy in recent seasons.

Shea Charles was the latest addition to the senior side this summer, while goalkeeper Josh McNamara joined Southampton's Under-21 side.
