SAINTS manager Russell Martin insists Adam Armstrong can "definitely get better" despite continuing to push the Championship's top scorers.

Only Blackburn Rovers forward Sammie Szmodics has more goals than the 26 year old, who scored his 10th of the campaign in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town.

Armstrong, who was unable to get to grips with the Premier League after signing for Saints for £15million in August 2021, has netted 17 in his last 20 Championship appearances.

The former Newcastle United man has operated in multiple different positions for Martin and his versatility could be key for the gradual introduction of Ross Stewart.

Assessing Armstrong's performance at John Smith's Stadium, Martin told the Daily Echo: "Adam was great.

"He was one of the ones who played with aggression and intensity even in the second half. He has been brilliant for us.

"It was a beautiful goal he scored. He just needs to keep it going, he’s been a big player for us," the boss continued.

"The industrious side of him is so important for the team and any player in that position. I have been really pleased with him.

"I think he can definitely get better as well. He is improving and his understanding of what we want is improving all the time, he has become a real leader in the group."

Armstrong is expected to lead the line when Saints host Bristol City on Wednesday, November 29, looking to make it 10 matches without defeat in the Championship.
