SAINTS captain Jack Stephens is set to be named in the squad to face Watford, manager Russell Martin has confirmed.

The 29 year old has not featured for Saints since a calf injury in the 2-1 win over QPR in August, weeks after being named skipper.

Stephens has been in training since November and is now set to make Martin's squad when they visit playoff challengers at Vicarage Road.

He is likely to be named as a substitute following the form of Jan Bednarek and Taylor Harwood-Bellis but Martin insisted it will be a boost.

Martin said: “Jack Stephens is back in the squad this week which is really good news for us.

"I’ve been surprised by how good he’s looked, not in terms of his ability, but you expect a bit of rustiness and a bit of time to adapt and get back into it but he’s hit the ground running.

“He’s come back into training and added voice, added a huge amount of quality and he’s hungry to get back into the team.

"He wanted to be back in the squad two weeks ago but had to be a bit patient. He’s putting big pressure on the guys in front of him who have played.

"Jack may have to wait a little bit for his opportunity but when it comes I am sure he will take it.”

Will Smallbone is also set to make the group to face Watford having been absent from the squad last time out in the 2-0 win over Cardiff City.

Martin continued: "Will’s back in the squad as hoped and planned.

"Obviously, there’s always a bit of risk involved, but he’s trained well for a couple of days and it’s nice to have him back in the squad."
