FORMER Saint Carlton Palmer believes it's a "really difficult situation" for Russell Martin amidst rumours Mason Holgate could be recalled by Everton.
The defender has only featured five times for Southampton since joining on loan from the Premier League outfit.
Previous reports have suggested that Everton want to recall Holgate from the south coast due to his lack of minutes.
Speaking to Football League World, Palmer expressed how Holgate's spell at Saints has been an example of the "cut-throat reality of football".
He said: "Everton are (reportedly) planning to recall Holgate from his loan spell at Southampton in January, due to his lack of game time.
"Obviously, Everton and the player are frustrated over the situation as he's only made five appearances thus far.
"It's a really difficult situation for the manager, Russell Martin as he saw Holgate endure a torrid debut against Sunderland.
"Southampton were not getting results and Martin was under pressure himself, therefore he had to make changes and in doing so, the club's fortunes have changed which has limited Holgate's first-team chances.
"That is the cut-throat reality of football. Holgate will have no shortage of takers in January.
"Middlesbrough and Watford are two clubs that are really keen to take him, then he'd be able to showcase his ability."
Holgate's last appearance for Saints came in a 2-1 win over his former loan side West Brom in November.
The 27 year old was named man of the match in that game, but it wasn't enough to capture Martin's attention and demand more minutes.
The Saints boss has indicated that Holgate is frustrated at his lack of game time, especially given the relentless nature of fixtures during December.
Club captain Jack Stephen's return to full fitness will likely only decrease Holgate's chances of asserting himself on the Saints starting lineup.
Asked earlier this month by the Daily Echo if there is a possibility his loan could be terminated by the Toffees, Martin refused to rule it out.
He said: "There has been no conversation about that as far as I am aware. Mason came back into the team and did really well after a difficult start.
"He can't do anything else than play really well and be a good teammate. I took him out of the team because I felt Janny deserved his place back following suspension.
"The most frustrating thing is that he cannot control that. That was my decision and it was tough.
"When you care about them it's a horrible conversation and it's why leadership can be very lonely, you feel the anger they feel towards you. I can't sit here and say he is definitely staying."
