SAINTS kick off 2024 with a trip to manager Russell Martin's former club Norwich City this afternoon.

Martin spent almost a decade at the Canaries during his playing career, but will now be hoping to beat his former side to keep Southampton's momentum going.

Saints are currently chasing Norwich's local rivals Ipswich Town, who sit above the south coast side in second place.

Here's how we expect Southampton to line up on the opening day of 2024....

Goalkeeper and Defenders

Despite his error against Plymouth Argyle costing Saints a fifth straight home clean sheet, Gavin Bazunu is not at risk of losing his starting spot between the sticks.

Kyle Walker-Peters also shows no signs of being rested and was named in last Friday's Championship team of the week. Ryan Manning will be on the left.

Centre-backs Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek were excellent against Plymouth and would be unlucky to lose their spot.

Daily Echo:

Midfielders

The important question heading into Norwich is whether Flynn Downes has recovered from his illness.

Martin outlined that the loanee could have started against Plymouth, but that Southampton do not plan to take any risks.

With that in mind, Shea Charles could keep his place at the base of midfield. Will Smallbone can help provide defensive cover.

Although Charly Alcaraz scored against Plymouth, he has regularly been in and out of the Saints lineup. It is Stuart Armstrong that we predict will start at Carrow Road.

Forwards

Scottish international Che Adams has scored in both of his last two games for Southampton and should keep his place at Norwich.

Daily Echo: Russell Martin is hoping Saints can keep Che Adams in January

He will likely start in the forward line alongside his close friend and strike partner Adam Armstrong.

Sam Edozie has made a splash since returning to the starting lineup but may need to have his minutes managed.

Joe Aribo could come in to take his place before he departs for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Full predicted team:

Bazunu; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Harwood-Bellis, Manning; Charles, Smallbone, S Armstrong; Aribo, A Armstrong, Adams.
