MANAGER Russell Martin was frustrated after Saints drew 1-1 with Norwich on Monday and insisted they should have scored more.

Adam Armstrong gave Southampton the lead with his 13th goal of the season so far on 70 minutes.

He tapped in from close range after a low cross from Kyle Walker-Peters before Norwich hit back six minutes later through Josh Sargent.

Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, Martin admitted he felt his side should have kickstarted 2024 with three points.

He said: "I thought we were really good and I am proud of the performance. We were playing against a Norwich team who have found it difficult to build momentum.

"They've got brilliant players for this level. We knew it would be a really tough game. I was surprised by the way they set up but it's testament to how we have done.

"But we should win the game. I am frustrated we don't win. We were so dominant. That was as flat of an atmosphere I've seen here - and I've played a lot of games here.

"I'm frustrated we don't win. For us to have that amount of dominance away from home. We should score another goal or two and the game is done."

For the most part, Norwich piled men behind the ball and looked to prevent Southampton from having space in the final third.

That was reflected in the possession stats as Saints finished the game with 75 per cent of the ball.

Sargent's goal came on the break, with the US international cooly slotting past Gavin Bazunu, who had come off his line.

"We were excellent," Martin continued. "We didn't allow Norwich to get into any flow, we kept the ball relentlessly and should score.

"But we were playing against a low block and two of the biggest centre-backs in the league who defend their box so well.

"You can't keep playing crosses in there. You need to find a way. The goal was really high quality.

"Angus Gunn makes a few good saves because he is an excellent goalkeeper who they spent a lot of money on.

"It's a frustrating point because we deserve more. Their goal came out of nowhere. Jonathan Rowe, who has been their best player, should get fouled in the build-up. We paid for that."
