SAINTS have confirmed the signing of AFC Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell on loan until the end of the season.

The 29 year old has arrived on a deal until the summer, strengthening Saints’ squad ahead of their push for promotion to the Premier League.

Rothwell arrives at St Mary’s having made 31 Premier League appearances for the Cherries, including 11 in the current campaign.

He joined the Cherries on a free transfer in 2022 after four years with Blackburn Rovers.

Speaking after signing, Rothwell said: “I’m thankful to Southampton for allowing me to come here.

"Hopefully, I can come in and show my experience of this league and help them get over the line.

“I can't wait to finally get going and put my boots on, and hopefully we can get the club back to where it belongs.”

Rothwell becomes Southampton's fifth loan signing of the season, alongside Flynn Downes, Ryan Fraser, Mason Holgate and Harwood-Bellis.

A graduate of the Manchester United academy, Rothwell also has significant experience in the Championship, playing 161 times during his spell with Rovers.

He turned out alongside current Saints players Adam Armstrong and Taylor Harwood-Bellis during his time at Ewood Park.

Speaking about Rothwell's arrival, Southampton's director of football Jason Wilcox added: “Joe is a quality addition.

"He gives us further strength and depth in the squad, which will be particularly important as the season goes on.

“We’re very pleased to be able to bring in a player of his experience and ability.”

EFL rules stipulate that a team can only include five loan players in any single match-day squad.
