MANAGER Russell Martin insisted new signing Joe Rothwell will be "better for" his debut at Swansea City.

The Bournemouth man came on in the 76th minute at the Swansea.com Stadium in place of Stuart Armstrong - to make his first Saints appearance.

He only managed 13 touches in his 21 minutes but did make three recoveries during his cameo.

Martin previously outlined that Rothwell has been signed to play in an advanced midfield role, rather than a defensive one.

Speaking to the Daily Echo about Rothwell's debut, the Saints boss explained that his first minutes will help him understand his new role.

Martin said: “He will be better for that time on the pitch. We will have loads of clips that we can show him.

“That will help him develop his understanding. I think it is good for him to get on as early as he can in his period here.

“He will play next week in the cup - that will be really important for him to get some minutes and understand it.

“Today was a chance for him to experience that and he will be better for it.”
