Saints academy director Andy Goldie explained: "We look forward to supporting Ussumane's development within the under-21s programme over the remainder of the season, having been impressed with his progress at club and international level.
"He's an interesting prospect who strengthens our pathway in midfield and provides much-needed competition in our under-21s group."
The Daily Echo understands the move is engineered to allow Saints staff to have a closer look at Djalo over the next four months.
The club can then make a more informed decision in the summer over the long-term future of the Guinea-Bissau-born player.
Saints could opt to make a permanent move for Djalo - who was reported elsewhere to have a release clause worth £8million in his contract.
Djalo is yet to make his debut for Porto's senior side and is on a deal that expires next summer, in 2025.
Djalo has been capped by Portugal's under-15 to under-19 national sides and began his career in Benfica's academy before joining Porto and featuring for their B Team in Portugal's second division and the UEFA Youth League.
