MIDFIELDER Alice Griffiths insisted that every one of Southampton FC Women’s remaining games this season are “must-win.”

Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s side take on fellow promotion chasers Birmingham City on Sunday.

Saint currently sit fourth in the Championship, one point above the Blues and three points behind league leaders Charlton Athletic.

“It’s a big game for us this weekend because we now know that every game is must-win until the end of the season,” Griffiths told the Daily Echo.

“We are still in the title race. Birmingham are one of the teams that are fighting us for promotion.

“They are a really good team. We will have to be at our best to get a result against them.

“They have a lot of players with individual quality, but collectively they like to battle.

Daily Echo:

“They had a late run of form last season, you have always got to expect that from them.

“We have to focus on ourselves and putting out our best performances. We can only control what we can control.

“The perfect example of that was against Palace. We lost, but when we came back into the changing room we saw that other results had helped us out.

“We were disappointed because we ultimately want to be top, but that gave us a lifeline.

“That is not going to happen every week. We have to take it and now do better this week.”

The 23 year old made her return from injury last Sunday, playing 45 minutes against Manchester United as Southampton exited the FA Cup.

“I didn’t expect to come back into the starting line up straight away to be fair,” Griffiths added.

“I was really pleased. That gave me the confidence to go out and play from the start. I just wanted to be back out there playing football

“To do it against United, one of the best teams - there is no better place to challenge yourself on your return.”

Griffiths has once again been called up to the Welsh national team this week ahead of their friendly against the Republic of Ireland.

Fellow Southampton player Megan Wynne did not make interim boss Jon Grey’s squad, which includes five uncapped players.

Those changes could help Griffiths showcase herself in a competitive midfield, boasting WSL all-time appearance maker Sophie Ingle and Seattle Reign’s Jess Fishlock and Angharad James.

“I’m really excited to go away. It’s always a privilege to be called up by your country.

“There are a lot of changes going on at the minute.

“You could say it’s an uncertain time, but I’m just trying to keep my name in the mix. I just want to go away, play well and enjoy being there.”
