GOALSCORER David Brooks believes his first Southampton goal "calmed the nerves" in their 2-0 win over West Brom on Friday evening.

The 26 year old fired past Alex Palmer to cap off a brilliant team goal which moved through Joe Aribo, Stuart Armstrong and Sam Edozie before the decisive touch.

Brooks' goal added to his two assists against Huddersfield, taking his tally of goal involvements in a Southampton shirt up to three.

“They were a really tough team and are right up there so it was important to get a two-goal cushion as anything could happen," the Welsh international told Sky Sports.

"When we got the second goal it calmed the nerves a bit and we managed to keep the ball better. It also quietened the crowd so it was a win-win.

“There is no secret why I came to Southampton in the first place – it was to get more minutes and start enjoying it.

"I know what I can do when I get on the pitch. Thankfully that’s the first and hopefully the first of many."

Southampton have four days until they are back in action on Tuesday evening when they host playoff hopefuls Hull City.

“We are in in the morning," Brooks replied when asked how his next few days will look. "It’ll be a drive to Southampton, an ice bath and then home.

"We don’t like to look at the table because there are 15 games left and anything can happen. We just need to focus on ourselves and go game by game and keep on picking up three points."
