NEW Eastleigh boss Kelvin Davis insisted his new side's 5-2 win at Oxford City on Tuesday was "very pleasing".
The Spitfires stormed into a 3-0 lead after 11 minutes as Davis' reign at the club got off to the perfect start - with Paul McCallum scoring twice and Ludwig Francillette also on the scoresheet.
Further goals from Scott Quigley and Jake Taylor put the game beyond any doubt for the visitors, who won for the first time in 11 matches.
Speaking to Eastleigh's club media after the game, Davis was proud of the players for their response to his appointment.
He insisted: "It was a good start, the lads had a lot of information. We felt we were trying to balance the amount of information we gave them, but they took it on really well.
"They gave us a lot of effort. We’re asking for more, they want to give more. We didn’t finish the game as strong as we’d liked but overall, it was very pleasing.
"We spoke about (a fast start). We wanted a reaction from the team, we wanted them to come out and be quite hot."
Despite having had just one training session with the players after his appointment on Monday, the former Southampton goalkeeper admitted the squad has been "brilliant".
He added: "They have been open to new ideas so it’s pleasing that when you give those ideas, they come to fruition. The lads have been brilliant.
"It’s great that we can stand here now and say that we’ve collected three points to get closer to our goal.
"We wanted the team to be more connected and together and they did that as long as they could today.
"It became obvious that we asked a lot from them physically, but we’d got ourselves into a good position.
"Although we didn’t finish as well as we’d liked, we did enough in the game to take the three points."
Eastleigh's recent form had seen them go from play-off contenders to relegation candidates and led to Richard Hill losing his job after Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Ebbsfleet United.
The victory over Oxford City is the Spitfires' first win of 2024 with their last success coming against Dorking Wanderers on December 23.
Davis acknowledged it was "great" to give the fans a win due to the two-month-long drought and hopes everyone connected with the club can "enjoy" the result.
He continued: "It's great to give them a win. I had a few family members here myself coming to support their new team so it's enjoyable. You want to put smiles on faces.
"I’m pleased for the club, the players, and the fans who can enjoy that. The work that all the staff have put in to produce that performance is really pleasing."
Eastleigh host second-placed Bromley in the National League on Saturday in Davis' first game at the Silverlake Stadium.
