MANAGER Russell Martin wants Saints winger Kamaldeen Sulemana to be “a killer” and turn more of his chances into goals.

The 22 year old had opportunities to score in Southampton’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool - hitting the post and seeing shots saved by Coaimhin Kelleher.

Ryan Fraser’s recent injury, which has ruled him out until after the international break, could afford Kamaldeen with more starts.

Asked by the Daily Echo if Kamaldeen has staked a claim to start with his performance at Anfield, Martin replied: “I thought he was great, but he should score.

“The next step for Kamaldeen is getting things right in the final third. Even when he had a run of games before he got injured he only got three assists.

“He has a lot of moments that should lead to more - he knows that. He is so talented. I thought he was great against Liverpool.

“He was so disciplined in his position and did a good job out of possession for the team. He had some amazing moments with the ball.

“It’s now about staying fit in order for him to get to the level he is capable of. He needs to get that last action in front of goal right and become a killer.”

Kamaldeen has only scored twice for Saints - a brace against Liverpool on the final day of last season - since joining for a club record fee.

Despite waiting for his first goal of this season, Martin senses that the Ghanaian international remains full of self belief.

“He is a young guy who is learning all the time and will be an important player for us,” the manager continued.

“I think he is a little frustrated that he has had injuries, then got into a flow and then had to come out with injuries again.

“He backs himself. It’s in there, we see it in training all the time. I feel like once he gets one and relaxes a little bit he will end up getting a lot.”
