MANAGER Russell Martin claimed Saints would not have lost 5-0 at Leicester City if he had started captain Jack Stephens.
Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu scored three goals, with Wilfred Ndidi and Jamie Vardy also on target for the Foxes.
Saints did not lay a glove on the hosts but remained in the contest until the 60th minute, when Ndidi headed in the second goal.
Martin regrets not starting the skipper, who also sat out for Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City.
Stephens came on in 83rd minute at 5-0 and then forced the players over to acknowledge the embarrassed away supporters at full-time.
Asked about his display of leadership, Martin said: "If Jack's playing tonight, we don't lose 5-0.

"My fault. When we get really close, how much do we really want it, how much do we really care? Tonight is not on.
Every word leader Jack Stephens said in brutally honest post-match interview at Leicester City.

💬 “I think when people look at that and say we gave up, they'd be right. I think that's the worst thing anyone can say about a group of players.”#SaintsFChttps://t.co/ZgwoxSPYOW
"So the team that plays from now on will be the team that I think really, really wants to fight for their teammates, really cares, really wants to win.
"And if you ask me about the team selection after this thing, you'll get the same answer. It will be that."
Martin continued: "I just said it on the radio there, the fans were amazing still clapping at the end.
"They deserve better than that. We need to give them a performance now on Saturday. There's no other choice, really."
