PRIME Minister Rishi Sunak has said he hopes forward Che Adams is fit to fire Saints back to the Premier League at Wembley.

Saints take on Leeds United for the Championship playoff final on Sunday, May 26, with the last spot in next season's top flight up for grabs.

Mr Sunak was in attendance at St Mary's when Saints beat West Brom 3-1 in the second leg of their semi-final to book a trip to the capital.

Russell Martin's men did the job without star striker Adams, who missed both matches with a calf injury picked up at Elland Road.

Saints fan Mr Sunak was asked if he would rather win the next general election or see Saints promoted this week.

In response, the PM laughed as he told GB News: "Well, it was great to be at St Mary’s on Friday night with my family.

“It was a really special moment for the club, for the players, for the manager and in fact, the whole city was celebrating.

“I have never experienced an atmosphere like that at St Mary’s, for years at least. It was really brilliant, I am really delighted for everyone.

“I am looking forward to Sunday, hoping Che Adams is fit and we can march back up to the Premier League. Here we come.”

Martin told the Daily Echo that Adams will be an option for the final at Wembley and offered to play 15 minutes against the Baggies last Friday - but was not risked.
