FORMER Saints man Carlton Palmer believes a move to Southampton would be good for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

Clarke struck 15 Championship goals for the Mackems last term and many believe he is ready to step up to the Premier League.

The Daily Echo understands Clarke is on a list of potential targets but there has been no official approach made yet.

Palmer told Football League World: "It's been said by his agent (former Leeds United defender Ian Harte) that he wants to move on.

"I think it's almost certain to happen. Harte has repeatedly said that the choice would be there for him to move on. I think there will be a lot of interest.

"Clarke's been a consistent performer for Sunderland, and now it's time for him to move on and see if he can take it up to that next level in playing in the Premier League."

With David Brooks' loan spell coming to an end and Stuart Armstrong's future up in the air, Saints are likely to target bolstering their attacking options this summer.

Clarke scored against Russell Martin's side during the 5-0 thrashing at the start of September but missed Saints' 4-2 win in the reverse fixture due to an ankle injury.

Palmer added: "I think Southampton would be a good move for him. He would get the opportunity to play.

"The style that Russell Martin wants to play at Southampton is the way that Clarke likes to play."

The 23 year old has two years remaining on his contract at Stadium of Light, having joined from Spurs for an undisclosed fee in July 2022.

There is expected to be a lot of competition for the winger's signature, who is widely regarded as being one of the best players outside the top flight.
