SAINTS are working on a deal to sign Brazilian left-back Welington Damascena, the Daily Echo understands.

The 23 year old is out of contract at Sao Paulo at the end of 2024 and therefore Saints are in the driving seat in negotiations.

Welington is a Brazilian youth international and has made 146 appearances for his side, where he came through as a teenager.

The defender is a Brazilian Cup and Super Cup winner with Sao Paulo, who are fifth in Serie A this season after 14 matches played.

The Brazilan football season - and therefore player contracts - aligns naturally with the calendar year, unlikely football in Europe.

Saints are attempting to finalise a deal to sign Welington, who is a regular first-team starter at his current club.

Media reports in Brazil suggest that a deal is agreed with the player, although the Daily Echo is yet to have confirmation of that.

Welington could join on a free transfer with a pre-contract agreement, linking up with his potential new teammates in January 2025.

However, local reports suggest Saints could instead pay a small fee to Sao Paulo for his early release.

Saints have already landed a left-sided defender this summer with the free signing of experienced Burnley man Charlie Taylor, 30.

They also have Ryan Manning, 28, and Juan Larios, 20, in their ranks as options in this position. Jayden Meghoma, 18, meanwhile, is in the under-21s.
