MANAGER Russell Martin believes Ross Stewart can "play a big part" this season, but conceded Saints need to keep him fit.

The Scotsman has only played four times for Southampton since joining from Sunderland on deadline day last summer.

A pre-existing Achilles injury delayed his debut before a hamstring problem sidelined him soon after.

Stewart did make a return at the end of last season but played no part of the playoff semi-final second leg and playoff final.

Speaking after the first week of pre-season, Martin explained that the 28 year old is eager to make an impact this season.

He said: “Ross is looking really good. He just wants to score. He’s got a lot to his game that not a lot of people have seen here yet.

“Hopefully he can show what he has got. He has come back in a really good place, he’s in a really good position.

“I hope he can play a big part and I really believe that he can. We just need to keep him fit.”

Southampton play their first pre-season friendly this Friday against National League neighbours Eastleigh.
