SAINTS boss Russell Martin is pleased with how new signings Yukinari Sugawara, Charlie Taylor and Nathan Wood have adapted so far.

All three impressed the boss during Southampton's 7-1 win over Eastleigh at the Silverlake Stadium on Friday.

Fellow summer signings Adam Lallana and Ronnie Edwards were withdrawn against the Spitfires after feeling some tightness.

Japanese right-back Sugawara marked his first Saints outing with a goal from range while Taylor impressed playing in a back three.

Wood featured in the second half, playing alongside fellow England under-21s international Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who wore the armband.

Speaking to Southampton's media team, Martin outlined what has pleased him most from the new arrivals so far.

He said: “Yuki is a lovely man. He’s a really great person and a talented footballer. I’ve been really impressed by how quickly and seamlessly he has adapted to certain things.

“He has got a lot of quality. The way he fed the ball to Sam Amo helped him so much in the second half. His understanding of what the player in front of him needed was beautiful.

“He’s still got a lot of work to do. He needs to adapt to a different level and we need to make sure his family are settled and that he is happy.

“Yuki is a really good signing. Charlie (Taylor) is a man, he’s a proper player. He has adapted to everything we have thrown at him.

"It’s completely different to any way that he has played for the majority of his career. I’ve been really impressed by Charlie.

"Woody, I know everything about. His first pass was a bit heavy, a bit of tension, but once he got rid of that he was great.”
