STARLET Sam Amo-Ameyaw is hoping to prove himself to Southampton's coaches during pre-season.

The 18 year old has made the trip to Girona, Spain this week as Saints step up their pre-season preparations with a warm-weather training camp.

Amo-Ameyaw is now viewed as a senior player by Russell Martin following his breakthrough campaign last season.

Clubs hold interest in signing the young winger on loan, but Martin has challenged Amo-Ameyaw to "stake a claim" at Saints this summer.

The England youth international impressed on Friday night as Southampton recorded a 7-1 win over Eastleigh.

He won a penalty just after the break, which Sekou Mara dispatched, before dancing through defenders to set up Charly Alcaraz for the seventh goal.

Asked by Southampton's media team about his aims during pre-season, Amo-Ameyaw said: "I'd say to try and prove myself.

"Try to prove to the staff, the players and the coaches that I'm trustworthy and that I can play my part in the team."

Saints are set for a busy training camp this week with a number of double sessions and two friendlies arranged.

"It was tiring, the heat is killing us, but it was really good," Amo-Ameyaw added speaking after their session on Monday morning.

"It feels really good (to be out here with the team). Coming back for pre-season can be really tough, but I feel like it's been really good so far."

Saints are scheduled to face Ligue 2 Bordeaux on Wednesday, July 24 (10pm) before facing Montpellier on Saturday, July 27 (10pm).

Asked if he is looking forward to those games, Amo-Ameyaw said: "Yeah, 100 per cent. We have two tough games.

"But I feel with the team we have got now, we're more than capable of doing really well so I'm looking forward to it."
