MANAGER Russell Martin remains hopeful Ryan Fraser will re-join Saints this summer but accepted the club could be forced to move on.
Saints have attempted to strike a permanent deal with Newcastle United for Fraser, 30, who impressed on loan in the Championship last campaign.
However, the former Scotland international is under contract at St James' Park and the two clubs are yet to agree a deal for his release.
Martin is keen to reunite with Fraser after the nippy winger played multiple positions, scored six league goals and was a top performer in the play-off final.
Speaking to the Daily Echo during the club's pre-season training camp in Spain, Martin said: "I think we're all hopeful that at some point that will happen.
"But he's contracted to Newcastle. I think he would love to come back and we would love to keep him. Everyone wants him.
"Me, the fans, the owners, the players and the staff - Wee Man himself, but he is under contract at another club and a good contract.
"It's their prerogative to do what they want with him at the moment and unfortunately for us and for Wee Man, it's not what we want," Martin added.
"There'll come a time where if a deal can't be done with Newcastle, we're going to have to move on to other people and I think that's a natural thing.
"So much of football is about timing and there might come a time where it's no longer viable for us or an option. We have to be looking at other people as well."
Saints have also been linked with interest in wingers such as Sunderland's Jack Clarke, 23, and Crystal Palace's Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, 21.
Martin has been open about his desire to sign a winger having lost Fraser and Brooks - but it is unclear if another would be in addition to Fraser.
Reports in Spain suggest Saints are looking to finalise a deal for Villarreal forward Ben Brereton Diaz, 25, who can play anywhere across a front line.
