SAINTS boss Russell Martin insisted goalkeeper Alex McCarthy needs to play more minutes following his shaky performance at Oxford United.
The veteran keeper looked uncomfortable when playing out from the back during Southampton's 2-0 defeat on Wednesday evening.
The 34 year old played the ball straight to yellow shirts on a few occasions, handing the hosts free opportunities on goal.
McCarthy is currently viewed as Southampton's first-choice-goalkeeper following his decision to extend his contract on the south coast.
Asked if his latest performance is a worry heading into the Premier League season, Martin told the Daily Echo: "Not really. I think we're three weeks out.
"It's the first 90 minutes he's played. He needs to play. A lot now and just get used to it. Get ready.
"We obviously need to do some more work on a lot of things. So, yeah, he will be fine."

McCarthy made a surprise return to Southampton's starting lineup following Gavin Bazunu's injury last season.
He penned a new two-year deal at St Mary's this summer and is currently ahead of Mat Lis and Joe Lumley.
Martin has previously stated that Southampton's decision to move for another goalkeeper will be dictated by another keeper departing this summer.
McCarthy captained the side during the first half before skipper Jack Stephens gained the armband following his introduction.
