MANAGER Russell Martin admitted he is a long-term admirer of Fabio Carvalho after Saints have seen a bid rejected for the Liverpool attacker.
Southampton had a £15million bit turned down with the Reds reportedly only willing to sanction an exit for Carvalho if they receive a much higher offer.
Saints attempted to sign the Portuguese youth international on loan in January before he opted to join Hull City.
He hit nine goals, including one at St Mary's, and provided two assists during the second half of the Championship campaign.
Martin is set for a meeting with the ownership structure this evening to discuss Southampton's transfer strategy.
Sky Sports, the boss said: "Fabio is a player we have liked for a while. We spoke in January but we couldn't quite get it done for one reason or another.
Speaking to"We had a lot of strength in that position as well. He went and did really well at Hull. The rumour mill at this time of year is always very hot.
"We have been linked with a lot of players, some far from the truth and very true. He is a player that I admire and I like, but I'm sure lots of other managers do as well.
"I don't really have any more information on that right now. We will have to wait and see."
He continued: "I'm on a call this evening with the owners and Phil Parsons because it never stops in pre-season.
"We will discuss the strategy moving forward on every player we are currently involved with.
"I think that's the case at every club. You have to be ready because things change. Things are very fluid. We have to wait and see."
