SAINTS produced an impressive performance to secure a 1-1 draw with Italian giants Lazio on Wednesday evening.
Away from the brawl, Southampton's young team looked strong against tough opposition and could have secured a late win through Sam Edozie.
Ben Brereton Diaz scored after just five minutes before his goal was cancelled out by Valentín Castellanos' stunner.
Here is how we rated every Southampton performance...
Alex McCarthy - 5.
Continued to look shaky with the ball at his feet. Could do little about Lazio’s stunning equaliser. Should have conceded a second when he failed to win the ball when rushing out. Saved by Manuel Lazzari’s poor finish.
James Bree - 6.
Appears to be growing as an attacking threat while playing as a wing-back. Linked up well with Sam Amo-Ameyaw and Shea Charles.
Ronnie Edwards - 8.
His best performance since joining Saints. Looked assured on the ball and strong in the tackle. Did really well to retain possession when stitched up by a teammate.
Nathan Wood - 7.
Another solid performance from one of Southampton’s summer signings. Produced a key intervention when Lazio looked sure to score.
Ryan Manning - 7.
Completed a trio of good centre-back performances. Used in a different role than usual but one he has deployed for Martin at Swansea. Great slide tackle to deny Gustav Isaksen after a sharp counter.
Charlie Taylor - 6.
Played at wing-back with Manning at centre-back this time. Offered a positive option going forward.
Shea Charles - 6.
A solid performer from the Northern Ireland midfielder in a two-man midfield. Looked good in attack and won the ball back a few times. Combined well on the right.
Charly Alcaraz - 8.
Would have had a higher rating had he not been sent off following the brawl. His best Saints performance for a while. Stood out in attack and defence. Needs to do this more - minus the fighting.
Sam Amo-Ameyaw - 8.
Another mature performance from the teenager. Had two early chances. Showed his ability to find smart passes and beat his man. Got the better of his marker and sprayed a great ball out to Taylor. Continues to impress.
Sekou Mara - 8.
Dropped deep to provide support to Southampton’s two-man midfield. Played well but was caught out after a good combination between Amo-Ameyaw and Charles. Stepped up to the challenge.
Ben Brereton Diaz - 8.
Scored five minutes into his maiden St Mary’s appearance. Great finish. Looked confident when drifting in off the left. Subbed at halftime.
Substitutes
Sam Edozie - 6.
An improved performance from his outing at Millwall. Scuppered a chance moments after coming on when he set back for Amo-Ameyaw rather than shooting. Unlucky not to score a late winner after a good twist and shot in the box.
Tyler Dibling - 6.
Much like Amo-Ameyaw, he looks mature but still needs to improve his decision-making, which is natural for an 18 year old. Did really well to drive upfield but picked the wrong pass with Mara and Amo-Ameyaw in support.
Will Smallbone - 6.
Entered the game after the red card had zapped most of the energy. Looked to get on the ball. Important minutes in the legs.
Joe Aribo - 6.
In a similar situation to Smallbone. Came into midfield and looked assured. Did his chances of starting at Newcastle no harm with this brief cameo.
Jack Stephens - 6.
Came on for the impressive Edwards. Got the armband from McCarthy, who had been captain. Added experience to a young team.
Yukinari Sugawara - N/A.
Replaced Taylor with less than five minutes to go.
