HAMPSHIRE skipper Nick Gubbins admitted it felt "amazing" after they reached the Metro Bank One-Day Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.
Toby Albert’s fourth List-A half-century and two crucial wickets for Mohammad Abbas booked Hampshire a place in the knockout stages as they beat hosts Middlesex by 19 runs at Merchant Taylors’ School.
Albert struck 75 in an innings of 53 balls complete with four sixes, sharing stands of 59 with Liam Dawson (48) and 49 with Kyle Abbott (20 not out) as the visitors totalled 276-7, Luke Hollman taking 4-61 for the hosts.
Middlesex were in the hunt to chase down the target while Mark Stoneman 53 and Jack Davis 46 were sharing a stand of 90 for the fourth wicket, but Pakistani international Abbas returned to remove both, after which Abbott (4-48) saw Hampshire over the line as Middlesex were bowled out for 257 with 11 balls left.
With Derbyshire narrowly beating Durham at Chester-Le-Street, victory was enough to send Hampshire to the quarterfinals on net run-rate.
Gubbins said: "It feels amazing to be in the quarterfinals. I guess we did it the Hampshire way, keeping everyone on their toes, but we knew coming into it we had a chance.
"When you have got 11 blokes believing it can happen anything is possible. I don't think needing other results to go our way changes things that much.
"People are keeping an eye on scores throughout the day and we heard how close it was there (for Durham at home to Derbyshire).
"It was a massive case of doing our job because Middlesex pushed us really close. At the end of the day, we would have kicked ourselves if we had not done it ourselves.
"I think 276-7 was a good total. Toby Albert played another magnificent innings. He's having a great summer in all three formats.
"Abbo (Kyle Abbott) as well the finisher, he's becoming a specialist all-rounder at the back end with bat and ball, so it was awesome to see him enjoying his batting.
"We lost wickets throughout we didn't allow (them) to really capitalize and go big in the last 10, but boys played positively throughout and we got some partnerships going."
He added: "It was massive having Liam Dawson back and it just shows how much he loves Hampshire. He finished his game up in Leeds last night at about 9:30pm.
"I think I was tucked up asleep by the time he was leaving the ground. When guys like that want to come and play it shows how important this is to the club.
"There's no doubt we haven't been good enough with the bat and got out of tricky situations through guys in the mid to lower order.
"We've shown the Hampshire spirit in the field and fought very hard. That was shown again today.
"Tournaments are funny things. It is all about peaking at the right time and there is no doubt we haven't peaked yet."
